Tulsi Gabbard: The Former Democratic Congresswoman Who Left the Left When the Left Left Her

Tulsi Gabbard FOI

The military maven and former Democrat politician who woke up just in time.

In this edition of Faces of Intrepidity, a series where America Mission™ explores the brave and dauntless figures that the culture war has to offer, we’re profiling commentator Tulsi Gabbard. She’s a former congresswoman of Hawaii, current U.S. Army Lieutenant colonel, and political commentator. Her political journey continues; now it’s directly tied to this year’s election in a major way.

The Early Days

Gabbard was born in 1981 on American Samoa’s main island of Tutuila. When Gabbard was two years old, her family moved back to Hawaii.

In 2002, Gabbard was working as a self-employed martial arts instructor leading up to 2002, Gabbard dropped out of Leeward Community College, where she was studying television production, and became a self-employed martial arts instructor.

Hawaii’s Civil Servant

Gabbard’s political journey began that same year when she ran successfully for election to the Hawaii House of Representatives in 2002. Gabbard became the youngest woman ever elected as a U.S. state representative at the age of 21.

She served as a member of the Hawaii House of Representatives from the 42nd district. During her time in office, Gabbard enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve.

The Soldier & Dissident Democrat

In 2003, while serving in the Hawaii State Legislature, Gabbard enlisted in the Hawaii Army National Guard. She was in office until 2004.

That same year, she was deployed for a 12-month tour in Iraq, serving as a specialist with the Medical Company, 29th Support Battalion, 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. Gabbard chose not to campaign for reelection to the state legislature because of the deployment.

Gabbard graduated from officer school and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 2007. She was assigned to the 29th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the Hawaii Army National Guard. She served as an Army Military Police platoon leader and was stationed in Kuwait from 2008 to 2009.

After coming home, Gabbard went back to school. That same year, she graduated from Hawaii Pacific University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a focus on International Business.

Two years later, Gabbard served as a member of the Honolulu City Council from the 6th district, starting in 2011. She left that role in 2012.

A year later, Gabbard became a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Hawaii’s 2nd district. She entered office in 2013. The same year she entered office, she became the Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee.

In 2015, Gabbard was promoted from the rank of captain to major. She continued to serve as a major in the Hawaii Army National Guard until her transfer to the 351st U.S. Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations (PSYOPS) Command in 2020. Her time in service had made her anti-interventionist, leading her to disagree with some of then-President Trump’s foreign policy.

Gabbard officially launched her 2020 presidential campaign. Gabbard famously shut down Kamala Harris out on the debate stage, citing her time as California’s Attorney General.

Later that year, Gabbard dropped out of the 2020 election and endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden. Her anti-interventionist views led to her dissent from the increasingly war-hungry Democratic Party and soured their relationship. She was not invited to the 2020 Democratic National Convention.

That same year, Gabbard left the Hawaii Army National Guard for a new assignment with a California-based Army Reserve unit. In 2021, Gabbard was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant colonel, while she was deployed to the Horn of Africa.

A Democrat No More

In 2022, fed up with the state of the Democratic Party, Gabbard announced on Twitter that she was leaving the Democratic Party. She accused the Democratic Party leadership of being “now under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness” and “anti-white racism”. She labeled the party “hostile to people of faith and spirituality, and dragging us closer to nuclear war”. After leaving the party, Gabbard endorsed and campaigned for several Donald Trump-endorsed Republican candidates in the 2022 midterm elections such as JD Vance and Kari Lake.

In 2022, Gabbard started serving as the fill-in host for Tucker Carlson Tonight on Fox News. In 2022, after years of being a frequent guest on several of their programs, Gabbard signed a deal with Fox News as a paid contributor. She has served as a frequent guest and occasional host on other Fox News shows. She continued to be frequent guest host of Tucker Carlson Tonight until the show’s cancellation in 2023.

Team Trump

In March of this year, Gabbard was cited by Trump as one of his potential choices for his vice presidential running mate. In August, Gabbard endorsed former President Trump’s re-election bid, while in Michigan. Gabbard joined the Trump campaign team and was named as an honorary co-chair of Donald Trump’s presidential transition team, alongside Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Tulsi, the Republican

Last month, Tulsi announced at a Donald Trump rally in North Carolina that she’s officially joining the Republican Party. Here’s what she had to say.

“I’m joining the party of the people, the party of equality, the party that was founded to fight against and end slavery in this country. It is the party of common sense, and the party that is led by a President who has the courage and strength to fight for peace.”

“You know, I was a Democrat for over 20 years. Today’s Democrat Party is completely unrecognizable.”

“When you look at the party of Kamala Harris, for example, she is anti-freedom. She is pro-censorship, she is pro-open borders, and she is pro-war without even pretending to care about peace.”

The Fight for Our Future is HERE

THE ELECTION IS FINALLY UPON US! Tulsi Gabbard is on the Trump campaign team until the end and will be on his transition team should he win in the next few days, so she’s ready to go. Anyone who hasn’t made up their mind yet on who to vote for by now hasn’t been paying attention. So, only one question remains: are you going to vote?
