is a retired United States Army general who served in the military for over 40 years. During his time in service, he was the 39th Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army and 20th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff most notably.
Mark Alexander Milley was born in 1958 in Winchester, Massachusetts. He graduated from Princeton University in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in politics. He also holds Master’s Degrees from Columbia University in International Relations and from the United States Naval War College in National Security and Strategic Studies. He is also a MIT Seminar XXI National Security Studies Program graduate.
The same year as his Princeton graduation, Milley was commissioned as an armor officer in the U.S. Army through ROTC. Most notably, his career over the years has included assignments with the 82nd Airborne Division, 5th Special Forces Group, 7th Infantry Division, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Readiness Training Center, 25th Infantry Division, Operations Staff of the Joint Staff, and as Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense.
Moreover, Milley has held multiple command and staff positions in eight divisions and special forces.
From 1996 to 1998, Milley commanded the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry, 2nd Infantry Division in South Korea. From 2003 to 2005, Milley was the commander of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (LI). During his time in service, he deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. From 2007 to 2008, he served as Deputy Commanding General for Operations of the 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. During this time, he redeployed to Afghanistan.
From 2011-2012, Milley was the commanding general of the 10th Mountain Division. From 2012-2014, he was the commanding general of III Corps at Fort Hood, Texas, concurrently served as Commanding General of the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command in Afghanistan. Afterward, from 2014 to 2015, Milley was the commanding general of the U.S. Army Forces Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
From August 2015 to August 2019, Milley served as the 39th Chief of Staff of the Army. In the role, he focused on Army modernization and readiness.
In 2018, President Donald Trump nominated Milley as the 20th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In 2019, he assumed the role and became the principal military advisor to the President, the Secretary of Defense, and the National Security Council.
Back in June 2020, Milley was criticized for the Lafayette Square Incident. Milley participated in a photo-op with President Trump at St. John’s Church in Washington, D.C., shortly after authorities cleared the area of protesters with tear gas. He later issued a public apology, stating his presence created a perception of military involvement in domestic politics, which he regretted.
Milley considered resigning over the incident in front of St. John’s Church. He drafted a highly critical resignation letter to President Trump, but then decided against handing the letter over to him. The resignation letter draft was published in 2022.
“I regret to inform you that I intend to resign as your Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Thank you for the honor of appointing me as senior ranking officer. The events of the last couple weeks have caused me to do deep soul-searching, and I can no longer faithfully support and execute your orders as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It is my belief that you were doing great and irreparable harm to my country. I believe that you have made a concerted effort over time to politicize the United States military. I thought that I could change that. I’ve come to the realization that I cannot, and I need to step aside and let someone else try to do that.
Second, you are using the military to create fear in the minds of the people—and we are trying to protect the American people. I cannot stand idly by and participate in that attack, verbally or otherwise, on the American people. The American people trust their military and they trust us to protect them against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and our military will do just that. We will not turn our back on the American people.
Third, I swore an oath to the Constitution of the United States and embodied within that Constitution is the idea that says that all men and women are created equal. All men and women are created equal, no matter who you are, whether you are white or Black, Asian, Indian, no matter the color of your skin, no matter if you’re gay, straight or something in between. It doesn’t matter if you’re Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Jew, or choose not to believe. None of that matters. It doesn’t matter what country you came from, what your last name is—what matters is we’re Americans. We’re all Americans. That under these colors of red, white, and blue—the colors that my parents fought for in World War II—means something around the world. It’s obvious to me that you don’t think of those colors the same way I do. It’s obvious to me that you don’t hold those values dear and the cause that I serve.
And lastly it is my deeply held belief that you’re ruining the international order, and causing significant damage to our country overseas, that was fought for so hard by the Greatest Generation that they instituted in 1945. Between 1914 and 1945, 150 million people were slaughtered in the conduct of war. They were slaughtered because of tyrannies and dictatorships. That generation, like every generation, has fought against that, has fought against fascism, has fought against Nazism, has fought against extremism. It’s now obvious to me that you don’t understand that world order. You don’t understand what the war was all about. In fact, you subscribe to many of the principles that we fought against. And I cannot be a party to that. It is with deep regret that I hereby submit my letter of resignation.”
General Mark Milley, June 8th, 2020
One of Milley’s most notorious controversies was his role in the 2021 botched U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. He argued for a continued U.S. military presence but publicly supported President Biden’s decision to withdraw. The chaotic nature of the withdrawal led to criticism from various quarters about the planning and execution, with Milley being part of the discussions around the strategy.
Another one of Milley’s controversies involved his secret calls with Chinese military leaders. Milley made two calls to General Li Zuocheng of the PLA. The first was in October 2020, where he allegedly reassured China that the U.S. was not planning an attack, and the second was in January 2021, shortly after January 6th, to ensure stability in U.S.-China relations. These actions were criticized by some, including President Donald Trump, who accused Milley of treason for going behind the president’s back. Milley maintained that these calls were within his duties, ensured strategic stability, and were coordinated with U.S. officials.
Milley served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff until September 2023. That same year, he pressured President Biden to avoid shooting down a Chinese spy balloon.
Milley was embroiled in controversy over the teaching of critical race theory in military academies. During a 2021 House Armed Services Committee hearing, he defended the inclusion of such studies in military education, leading to accusations of promoting a woke military. Milley dismissed their accusations as “offensive”.
Last year, Milley committed to ending drag queen story hour events on military bases after being presented with evidence by former Congressman Gaetz from Florida.
In 2023, Milley retired from the U.S. Army, ending his 40-year+ military career. Post-retirement, he joined Georgetown University as a Distinguished Fellow in Residence and became involved in academia and public speaking, particularly on international security and leadership. Allegedly, Milley feared being recalled to active duty and court-martialed if Trump returned to office, citing concerns over previous actions like the calls to China.
Milley reportedly said Trump was ‘fascist to the core’ and “the most dangerous person to this country”, but now says America will ‘be okay’ under him. Last month, Trump’s campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung blasted Milley, calling him a “woke train wreck”.
Last year, Milley stated that Ukraine could defeat Russia. He also told 60 Minutes that America’s defense budget would have to increase, if not double if Putin were to win in Ukraine because the chances of war with Russia would increase. Nowadays, America & NATO are inching closer to World War III with Russia, thanks to the risky decisions of President Biden. Just recently, Biden approved US missiles for attacks against Russia by Ukraine. Russia has responded with threats against America while retaliating with intermediate-range ballistic missiles against Ukraine, as North Korean troops join the Russians down on the battlefield.
Earlier this year, JP Morgan hired Milley as a senior advisor. JP Morgan is partnered with BlackRock to rebuild Ukraine after the war. How kind and generous of them!
After Fox News host Pete Hegseth was nominated by President-elect Donald Trump, Milley criticized Hegseth’s previous comments and defended women serving in military combat roles. Moreover, Milley criticized DOGE, the upcoming Department of Government Efficiency, worrying that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will significantly reduce the Pentagon’s budget.
And there you have it—the illustrious career of retired General Mark Milley. He’s a glory hound general who helped turn the Pentagon into a woke circus show. As he sunsets into retirement, we can only hope he’ll find a quieter stage where his knack for drama won’t dictate national policy. Thanks for joining America Mission™ on this wild ride through the life of a military man who knew how to play the Pentagon like a cheap fiddle.
