The Ron Paul Revolution Reborn

Ron Paul FOI
Share the mission…

The Ron Paul Revolution and Tea Party Movement’s remnants have returned, thanks in big part to President Trump, Elon Musk, and Vivek Ramaswamy’s DOGE.

In this edition of Faces of Intrepidity, a series where America Mission™ explores the brave and dauntless figures that the culture war has to offer, we’re profiling Ron Paul. He’s the former Congressman from Texas and presidential candidate who lit a fire in the hearts of pro-liberty Americans across the country.

The Early Days

Ron Paul was born in 1935, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He went to Gettysburg College and graduated with a B.S. degree in Biology in 1957.

Paul earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from Duke University’s School of Medicine in 1961. Paul went on to complete his medical internship at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Dr. Paul went to Pittsburgh for his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Magee-Womens Hospital.

Paul read and was influenced by Austrian economist Friedrich Hayek’s The Road to Serfdom while a medical resident. He began to read publications by Austrian economists Ludwig von Mises, Hans Sennholz, and Murray Rothbard, along with novelist and Objectivist philosopher Ayn Rand. Paul credits his interest in and knowledge of free market economics to them.

The Military Doc

From 1963 to 1965, Paul served as a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force. After that, he served in the United States Air National Guard from 1965 to 1968. He retired from the military after reaching the rank of Captain.

The Congressman

Paul began his career in politics in 1976 with his first run for political office. He ran for the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas’s 22nd district as a Republican but lost to the incumbent Democrat Robert R. Casey. However, Casey was nominated by President Gerald Ford for the Federal Maritime Commission, leaving his office vacant. Paul won the special election.

Paul lost the next regular election to Democrat Robert Gammage by less than a percent. However, in 1978, Paul was elected to Congress after winning the special election for the 22nd district of Texas against Gammage in a rematch, marking his first term in Congress. Paul went on to be reelected in 1980 and 1982. Paul advocated for libertarian values like limited government and free markets in the form of spending reductions, deregulation, and more.

Paul retired from the House in 1984 to run for the U.S. Senate. In his House farewell address, Paul lamented Congress’s corruption through its involvement with special interest groups. Paul lost the Republican primary to Phil Gramm. Gramm had switched parties the previous year from Democrat to Republican. After leaving, Paul went back to delivering babies at his private practice. Dr. Paul delivered over 4,000 babies during the course of his medical career before retiring.

The Presidential Candidate

Paul left the Republican Party in 1987 and launched a bid for the presidency running on the Libertarian Party ticket in the 1988 presidential election. Paul made it on the ballot in nearly all states and earned half a percent in the popular vote. Despite the lack of success there, Paul was content with using his presidential run to promote libertarian values.

Paul considered rerunning for president in 1992 but instead endorsed Republican Pat Buchanan. Paul served as an advisor to Buchanan’s unsuccessful presidential primary campaign against incumbent President George H. W. Bush.

The Congressman once again

Paul eventually returned to the Republican Party to run for Congress. He won and served from 1997 until 2013 after winning a race for Texas’s 14th district. During this time, his son, Rand Paul, became a United States Senator (R-KY) in 2011. This made Ron Paul the first United States Representative in history to serve concurrently with a child in the Senate.

During his time in Congress, Paul gained a reputation as the godfather of the Tea Party Movement. Stylized after the infamous Boston Tea Party, this movement advocated for limited government, tax cuts, and non-interventionism. During Paul’s farewell address to Congress, he lamented DC’s corruption through its involvement with special interest groups.

The Presidential Candidate once more

Paul ran again for the Republican nomination for President in 2012. Although he did not win, his campaign had a profound impact on the GOP, influencing the party’s culture towards more libertarian-leaning views on privacy, surveillance, and foreign policy.

Liberty’s Diplomat

Paul returned to the Libertarian Party in 2015. Over the years, Paul continued to be an influential figure in politics. He’s been associated with people like RFK Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard, both of whom are nominees for Trump’s cabinet. For more on them, check out their stories in America Mission‘s Faces of Intrepidity.

The DOGE Advisor

Billionaire entrepreneur and political activist Elon Musk expressed interest in having Paul join the proposed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) during a second Trump presidency a few days before the election.

Musk is interested in cutting the U.S. federal budget by up to $2 trillion. Paul responded that he was happy to discuss the idea with Musk. Though Paul declined any “official position” within the new department, Paul is already acting as an advisor to Elon, Vivek, and the DOGE team. Moreover, Elon Musk’s America PAC acknowledged Ron Paul’s analysis as well. Tune in Next Time

The name Ron Paul has once again echoed through the halls of politics. His staunch libertarian views and sound monetary policy advocacy have rewarded him with his advisory role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Under his guidance, this project will be streamlining government operations under Trump’s administration. America Mission will keep track of this story and more like it because this fight is far from over.
